FROM THE GM’S DESK

Dear Fellow Members

Henry Timrod once wrote “spring is a true reconstructionist” a comment so apt to us in our situation. With acres of parkland that have turned brown and dusty during the cold winter months are now slowly starting to rejuvenate themselves into lush green fairways and colour filled flowerbeds. The first summer rains or Gods wine as I was once told will soon set the pace of change and new life into motion.

But not everything is as rosy as it may seem. Sadly on Tuesday the 24th of August Tiger Ralakwela our long serving Barman’s house burnt down leaving Tiger, his daughter, son and two other family members without a possession in the world other than the clothes on their backs. A thought one could barely imagine to understand.  Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze and it wasn’t long before the true colours of Killarney came to the fore.  In a bar whip around on Saturday the 28th  a sum of R8,250 was raised in minutes with a further R1,406 from the Bowls Section. Numerous donations of clothing, bedding, appliances and furniture have been received or pledged and I would ask you, should you wish to contribute to please contact me in this regard. The matter was also discussed at General Committee on the 25th and Gencom has unequivocally offered both financial and material assistance.

Two dates to diarise would be Wednesday the 6th October when we will be hosting an “Ultimate Sensory Experience Whisky Tasting”. Seats are limited so please check the notice boards for details as well as the advert in this month’s edition. The second date is the 11th of November when we’ll be holding our second Fun Quiz Night.  Full details on this event to follow.

Once again my sincere thanks for your support and assistance towards Tiger and his family.

I would also like to wish all our Muslim members well over Ramadan and our Jewish members a Happy New Year and well over the fast.

With kind regards

Bruce Humphreys
