Bowls: Charity TournamentsSelwyn Segal Day 2010
The bowls section of the Killarney Country Club held its annual Selwyn Segal Charity Day on Sunday, 25th July. First held in 1963 at the Sharon Country Club in Edenvale, the tournament moved to the Killarney Bowling Club when the two clubs merged in 1988.
This year’s tournament attracted entries from 30 men’s and 10 ladies teams of 4s from the bowlers of Killarney as well as bowlers and teams from nine other bowling clubs in the Gauteng district.
The Selwyn Segal Society for the Jewish Handicapped is home to more than 120 mentally and physically challenged adults and children of all ages and the contribution from this Killarney bowls tournament has become an important source of income for the Home.
With the generous support of business, business leaders, members of participating clubs and the members of Killarney Bowling Club, an amount in excess of R320,000.00 will be donated this year.
On the day the tournament was played in glorious sunshine and was well attended by non playing visitors, executives from The Selwyn Segal Home and helpers from the Killarney membership. Every player received a prize and money prizes from a lucky draw amounting to R120,000.00 were distributed.
Although not up to the amount raised last year, the tournament exceeded the expectations of all concerned.

The Garrun Trips Tournament
The Ladies’ Garrun Trips (so called as the Garrun Group are the main sponsors), has been held annually since 2000.
Started by Beaconsfield Bowling Club and carried over to Killarney when the Beaconsfield/Killarney merger took place in 2005. It used to be played on a Thursday over four weeks but has now been changed to one day.
This year, from entries received, raffles, sponsorships and after deducting all expenses, the beneficiaries – Hospice, Hatzolah and African Children’s Feeding Scheme each received R13 000.
The tournament attracts 4 full greens of ladies, a total of 144 players and every player receives a prize.
Mid-morning tea consists of sandwiches and delicious cakes made by the members of Killarney. This is followed by lunch and a light supper before the prize-giving.
Both from the standing ovation afterwards and the telephone calls received since, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part.
