Golf: Course LayoutHole 1
A good opening par 4 with a generous fairway, protected by two bunkers on the right side. Following an accurate tee shot, a mid-short iron shot is required to a large green protected by a bunker on the left and back, and a swale on the right.
Hole 2
A short, but tricky par 4. An accurate three wood or long iron is required to a narrow, rolling fairway leaving a short approach to a well-bunkered green. Long hitters can have a go at the green with the driver, but face the consequences if the tee shot is slightly off line. This hole presents a birdie opportunity.
Hole 3
A challenging tee shot with bunkers on the left and a well-placed tree on the right of the fairway. Your second shot will require a long or mid iron, and is played slightly uphill to a narrow, two-tiered green guarded on the right and left by bunkers.
Hole 4
The fourth is the first par 3 played slightly downhill but long enough to require a long iron or fairway wood for most players. The green slopes severely from left to right and the sluit is extremely close on the right side so the premium is on accuracy.
Hole 5
An extremely attractive and exciting par 5 with a sluit on the left and out of bounds on the right. The ideal tee shot must land of the right side of the fairway as it slopes from right to left. The approach shot is played slightly uphill and over a large dam. Two well-struck shots will leave you a simple pitch to a multi layered, big green with bunkers on the left. A definite birdie opportunity.
Hole 6
The sixth is a mid length par 3 made interesting by a tree in the middle of the fairway over which you must play your tee shot. The green is long from left to right and has severe undulations that can present treacherous putts.
Hole 7
An accurate tee shot is required as trees and large mound protect the left side of the fairway, with a fairway bunker guarding the right side. Your approach is played slightly uphill with a long to mid iron over the ever present sluit to a long, narrow green guarded on the front right by a large bunker.
Hole 8
Out of bounds on the left and a large slope running away from the fairway to the right, demands an accurate , uphill tee shot to this narrow, terrace fairway. Your approach shot with a mid to short iron is played to a green nestling in the bottom of a bowl and guarded on most sides by well positioned bunkers.
Hole 9
Your tee shot is played slightly downhill and to the left to a narrow fairway protected by a sluit on the left, and trees on the right side. Your second on this long par 4 will be a wood or a long iron to a green protected by bunkers and a large dam on the right side.
Hole 10
An extremely demanding par 4 played to a fairly narrow fairway which is lined both left and right with large trees. Following a good drive you will still need a long iron or a fairway wood to get to this green in two shots. The green is protected on the front right by a deep bunker. Many members play this one as a par 5.
Hole 11
The eleventh requires a very accurate tee shot between the sluit on the left and the small forest on the right. There are no fairway bunkers and following a good drive you should be left with a slightly uphill second shot to a long green, which is protected front right and over the back by bunkers.
Hole 12
The twelfth hugs the out of bounds fence to the right, while the left is relatively open, apart from a series of well positioned fairway bunkers. A mid to short iron should be enough to reach the kidney shaped green protected by bunkers on the front right and back.
Hole 13
The thirteenth hole continues the pattern of the previous holes putting a premium on accuracy from the tee as out of bounds beckons on the right side. Your downhill tee shot into the valley will leave an uphill second over a dam to an elevated green protected on the right and left by strategically placed bunkers. One of the better and more demanding par 4’s at the Killarney Golf Club
Hole 14
A very testing par 3 indeed, played downhill and over the dam requiring a mid to long iron. The green slopes back to front and is protected on both sides by bunkers
Hole 15
This is an interesting and short par 5 where it is accuracy and not length that presents a birdie opportunity. From an elevated tee you drive to a wide but dogleg left fairway with a bunker catching a tee shot too far to the right. Your second is played to lay up short of the dam in front of the small green, although the brave player may be tempted to have a go for the green in two. You pitch shot is played to a large green protected by a bunker and the sluit on the left and a large bunker on the right.
Hole 16
A beautiful dogleg left par 4 played steeply uphill favouring the right side with your tee shot. Following a good drive, your second with a long to mid iron to a large green will require accuracy to avoid the well placed bunkers in the front and back.
Hole 17
A demanding par 3 that requires accuracy to avoid the bunkers that surround the front and left of the green. Find the heart of this green with your tee-shot, take 3, and make your way to the next tee!
Hole 18
A relatively short but tricky par 4, which requires accuracy all along. The fairway is flanked by large trees both left and right and the approach shot with a mid to short iron is played to a green protected by bunkers and an encroaching water hazard on the left.
